THOMAS JEFFERSON WARNED that making our education system compulsory and government-controlled would be a threat to liberty. We cannot be truly free by mandating school attendance under a legal threat of force. Compulsory education is a method of political control that consumes more of a child’s life than ever before. The progressive ideological agenda and the anything-goes curriculum are the standards of today that are shaping our children’s souls and leaving us with higher rates of apathy, bullying, stress and depression. Schools across the country have abdicated their responsibility of teaching students what they need to know.
We must re-empower parents with more education choices! Decentralized alternatives could include homeschooling, self-directed education, charter schools, voluntary school choice programs, with public information to inform parents and students about school choice opportunities. Whether we believe that our nature intrinsically motivates our learning, or that our education shapes our nature, we must reject the one-size-fits-all relic of state-controlled mass schooling!
ON THE OTHER HAND, school attendance is mandatory for a good reason – children cannot achieve success without the benefits of education. The study of complex concepts in school causes one to exercise their intellect and ask questions about what really is. Compulsory education is meant to free us, to learn to love that which we would otherwise not know. Unfortunately, ignoramus guardians would lead to educational neglect, with disastrous consequences, including criminal activity, drug use, and teenage pregnancy. ’Cause, dontcha know, that with no forced learnin' we would end up with ginormous amounts of lazy, illiterate, ignorant, neglected children.
THE CHAIRMAN, thinking that he made a huge mistake with his own children, has again called for a debate to settle the topic:
RESOLVED: Compulsory Education is Incompatible with Liberty
The Debate will be held on September 19, 2018, at Shamrocks Grill & Pub, 995 7th Street W., in Saint Paul (West 7th near Randolph Ave.)
The Chancellor will preside over drinks beginning at seven o’clock p.m. The debate will begin at half past seven. There is no dress code, however gentlemen who wish to speak must wear a tie; ladies are encouraged to adhere to a similar sartorial standard. For those gentlemen arriving sans tie yet wishing to discourse on the resolution, the Purveyor of Ties will keep on hand several remarkable selections.
In addition, the Chairman encourages all to join him as early as 6:30 pm for a bite to eat. Let us thank Shamrocks for the use of their room in the most sincere way possible -- by spending our money. God Bless Free Enterprise!
