"The center of every man’s existence is a dream." ― G.K. Chesterton
Man can also change the location where he pursues his dreams. His advances in communications technology enable him to evaluate the entire world to find where better opportunity and a better future await; and his advances in transportation technology make getting there possible, no matter how high the mountains or how wide the seas. Upon arrival, he joins his fellow dreamers – both native-born and immigrant – and brings his own contributions to his new home, further enhancing the lives of all. ON THE OTHER HAND, some dream of the opportunity to pursue their dreams in a home that protects the conditions that make that quest more than a pipe dream. They dream of a home that maintains the rule of law. That keeps them secure from outside threats. That can control its own borders and control its own destiny. They may dream of a "wall" – whether literal or figurative – that will defend their ability to pursue their dreams. Dreamers who come from afar to pursue their dreams in a new home may have to take steps to get over this "wall," but that is what makes their journey worth the effort. Without strong borders and the rule of law, sanguine dreams can transform into nightmares. THE CHAIRMAN, who dreams that someday you’ll join him and the world will be as one, in the meantime has called a debate to settle the topic: RESOLVED: We’re All Dreamers Now. The Debate will be held on February 7, 2018, at O’Gara’s Bar & Grill, 164 Snelling Ave. North, in Saint Paul at the corner of Snelling and Selby. The Chancellor will preside over drinks beginning at seven o’clock p.m. The debate will begin at half past seven. There is no dress code, however gentlemen who wish to speak must wear a tie; ladies are encouraged to adhere to a similar sartorial standard. For those gentlemen arriving sans tie yet wishing to discourse on the resolution, the Purveyor of Ties will keep on hand several remarkable selections. Questions regarding debate caucus procedures or about the John Adams Society itself may be directed to the Chairman at (651)245-6991 or the Secretary at (651)485-1699. |
